What makes us, us?

Our Centre

ABC Omahu consists of four adjoining rooms and two spacious playgrounds where children have lots of room to actively, investigate and explore and have fun with their friends. Our teachers plan your child’s learning experiences around their emerging interests and developmental stages. We share these experiences on Storypark (our online portfolio system) for you and your family to view and share.

Our Teachers

Our passionate, qualified teachers are committed to providing your child with meaningful learning experiences.  Our teachers come from diverse cultural backgrounds and bring their in-depth understanding of how children learn, and different areas of expertise together, to build strong foundations for your child and create a love of learning.

The Environment

Our centre caters for all ages and stages of your child’s development. From our quiet, nurturing infant nest exclusively for wee ones right through to school age where our passionate teachers ensure your child is well prepared and has the necessary skills to enter school with confidence and competence.  Our outside areas are spacious and encourage children to run, jump, climb and explore in a safe and fun environment.

Operating Hours

Our centre has extended operating hours and opens from 6.45am until 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. We are located opposite the Hawke’s Bay Hospital, with links to the expressway for easy access to both Hastings and Napier.

Nutritious Meals

Our two lovely cooks create delicious meals including morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, and each of our dishes are approved by the Heart Foundation.

Learning Through Play

We value free play and believe that children learn best when they are engaged in learning experiences that interest them.  Our rooms are equipped with resources at children’s level so they can explore, create, and learn at their own pace.  Teachers support learning by engaging, offering language and thought provoking questions within the learning environment.  At meals times your child will develop patience and turn taking, they will learn maths and science skills at the water trough, in the sandpit or while they are baking. They will learn about perseverance with blocks and communication and language skills in the puzzle corner – all while playing and having fun.

Koru Room (infants and toddlers 0-2)

This room is especially designed for young babies and toddlers, and includes a beautiful infant nest. Our teachers focus on nurturing your child’s development through happy, trusting and open relationships with you and your family.

Pohutukawa Room (2-3yrs)

Here we have lots of room for your child to use their imagination and explore their increasing understanding of themselves through their interests. Your child will participate in activities that promote independence, self help skills and develop foundations for future learning.

Rimu Room (3-4yrs)

The Rimu Room encourages your child to become an independent learner.  The room is designed so that your child is free to engage in areas of play that are enjoyable to them. Your child will have access to iPad’s (for educational purposes only) and writing materials to introduce them to early literacy and mathematics skills. A large outdoor sandpit with water-play for science exploration and discovery all play a key part as they continue on their learning journey.

Totara Room (4-5yrs)

This room recognises and encourages your child’s independence. Your child will have access to iPads, cameras, process cooking and other forms of technology to support their learning journey. We run a specialised Be School Ready initiative that is designed to prepare your child for school. We go on regular excursions and have connections to our local schools to support children during their transition to school.

Storypark

We are excited to offer our families access to Storypark e-portfolios. They are a great way to keep up to date with what your child is doing while at the centre. You can log in to the secure platform wherever you are in the world to see what’s been happening in their day, check out photos of them and comment on their activities. Please come in and visit us and see if we can provide you with the care and education you require for your family.
