BestStart Richmond Road, formerly First Steps Ponsonby, has an excellent reputation for providing quality childcare in the local and wider community. We’re located on Richmond Road, just in front of Richmond Road Primary School in Grey Lynn – a short walk from Ponsonby Road. It’s an easy drive from Westmere, Western Springs, Herne Bay, Point Chevalier and the CBD.

Choosing an early childhood centre can be a daunting and overwhelming decision. At First Steps Ponsonby, we work closely with parents and listen to the aspirations you have for your child and the expectations of care and education you have while at the centre. Together in partnership, we aim to work collectively to achieve these goals and many more that are presented along the pathway of learning.

We believe that our most important role is to provide a nurturing environment in which children will feel safe and secure. We’ll provide interactions that are positive, challenging and foster happy relationships. Our children, their families and Whanau will trust, grow and share in a unique partnership with us. Relationships along with an enriching stimulating environment help us to extend children’s strengths, interests and developmental needs.

The cultures of your families are valued and shared within the centre. We acknowledge and promote New Zealand’s bi-cultural heritage through understanding Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori. We reflect the unique place of Maori as Tangata Whenua and principle of partnership as acknowledged in the Treaty of Waitangi.

BestStart Richmond Road has a balance of choice and structure and strives to remain flexible in an ever-changing environment. Our quality learning programme is based on Te Whaariki (National Early Childhood Curriculum). Through play, children are exposed to early concepts of maths, science, art, reading and other curriculum in readiness for life long learning.

Most of all we aim to provide a caring and loving environment which nurtures children to reach their full potential as competent and confident learners.

Parent Feedback:

“Really pleased with my experience. The staff are wonderful – really warm and welcoming, take a real interest in my daughter and endlessly helpful and flexible to our family’s needs. I feel very confident leaving my daughter in their care, knowing she’s getting a lot of love and challenge.”

“The staff at Ponsonby First steps are wonderful. I can’t tell you how much love I feel when I walk in there with my child and the same with my other child who is now at school. The staff are so engaged from management, older carers upstairs and now Beena and Mary downstairs and to the kitchen. All of them know my daughter’s name and show her and me how much they care. I trust them all impeccably.”
