Welcome to First Steps Everglade Preschool. We welcome you to visit our centre and have a guided tour through our culturally rich and stimulating learning environment. We’re open from 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and have children in our care from 2 to 5 years old. Our Preschool has excellent staff to child ratios, quality equipment and toys in a safe, nurturing, stimulating and attractive learning environment. We have two rooms, each set up to meet the needs of children in different age groups and at different stages of learning. We have an inspiring outdoor play space that is safe and stimulating to enhance our tamariki’s learning. Our sister centre First Steps Everglade Babies is across the road – they care for infants from three months to two years of age.
We have a friendly team of qualified and committed teachers, a centre cook and centre administrator who provide the best learning and care environments for the children. We believe that children are willing learners who confidently engage in learning experiences in an attractive and settled environment. We believe that children are empowered to be capable, competent and confident learners when they are supported by Kaiako through positive relationships and quality interactions where they feel safe, secure and a sense of belonging. Thus we assure you that you and your child will enjoy your time with us.
We are proud to be part of a vibrant multi-cultural community and our centre has children coming from diverse cultural backgrounds which has proved beneficial to both our children and staff, enabling them to learn about, understand and respect the exciting cultural diversity within our community. We value and respect the child and their family and seek to include them into our centre for who they are. We will ensure to work collaboratively with each other, parents and the wider community to help our tamariki achieve their learning potential. Communication is of the utmost importance to us to ensure we have a strong partnership with everyone that comes into contact with us at Everglade.
We have a well-established Be School Ready initiative which all the children are involved in. We have strong links with the local schools such as Everglade Primary, Hill Park, Manurewa Central and Redoubt Primary School. We engage in a variety of ways in various school events and also encourage the neighbouring school children to be involved in our centre events. Our programme not only supports your child in their learning but extends their interests based on Te Whariki; our early childhood curriculum. Our unique Be School Ready initiative has been developed to ensure that children leave the centre as confident and capable learners ready for school.
We have a gold Healthy Heart award and work closely with the NZ Heart Foundation. We have a strong focus in the Hauora initiative which encourages children to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. We work collaboratively with outside agencies such as CCS disability and MoE to support our children with additional needs. The children brush their teeth at the centre and we work with Smile Care to promote an oral health programme in the centre.
We look forward to hearing from you and joining you in the journey of raising your child. Come and visit us.
We are excited to offer our families access to Storypark e-portfolios. They are a great way to keep up to date with what you child is doing while at the centre. You can log in to the secure platform to check out photos of them and comment on their activities. Click here for more information.
We have a Healthy Heart Award!

“Thanks so much for having me come to your Healthy Heart Award celebration last week! It was really amazing to come and see the Healthy Heart Award in action. When looking through your Healthy Heart Award application, the area that really stood out was the collaboration and engagement you have with your parents- this is definitely some of the best I have seen! Your menu and the effort Malita puts in is amazing. Congratulations again- you thoroughly deserve the Pa-Harakeke Gold Healthy Heart Award”. – Ainslie Ballinger – NZ Heart Foundation
“I hope you remember Alexander, after finishing up with First Steps we moved to Western Australia. Alex recently mentioned how much he misses First Steps, his friends and his teachers so I thought I would drop you a line. Again I would like to thank you all for the great care and support you guys did for Alex and for the wonderful times and memories he has First Steps. He wishes he can back and visit and play again with Natalie and Robyn”
“I have been really please with how Josie has settled in. It was a tricky decision to enrol her at First Steps but I believed she would benefit from a more social environment surrounded by children her own age. I am please to say she is thriving. She comes home talking about about her friends and teachers and the new food she is trying which is great! The staff are very approachable and we are always greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome . They show a genuine interest in our family. We attended the parent event for new families and really enjoyed it. It gave us a chance to have valuable conversations with teachers in a relaxed way. We have also been kept up with how she is progressing through daily chats at drop off and pick up and via Storypark. We are so pleased how smoothly Josie has transitioned.”
“I have seen Daniel grow in confidence and develop many new skill during his time at First Steps. His verbal skills are fantastic and his cognitive skills have really impressed me. I am confident he is well prepared for school. The Be School Ready initiative has given him a head start and is excellent. He has developed a well rounded set of tools that has set him up for success in the future.”
“My son has developed so much since he started. I am amazed how he is growing and at all the things he has learnt and experienced. Initially I felt anxious about leaving him but seeing the way the teachers made him feel and their actions and affections towards him made me feel better inside. Communication between the centre and home is very good. The teachers understand and listen to me and I appreciate their feedback and help. I know I have chosen the right daycare for my son.”
“My child enjoys going to preschool and never likes to miss a day from preschool only if she is sick and she knows she has to stay home until she is well. The staff are awesome and they communicate with the parents and children very well. I am thankful for their awesome job with my child.”
“I have really enjoyed having my children at First Steps Everglade. They are excited to arrive every morning and come home full of stories of achievements and things they have learnt. I feel supported by the staff and feel they take a genuine interest in my family and the well-being of my children.”
