First Steps Onslow is a multicultural childcare centre offering quality care and education in the heart of Papakura, 5 minutes from the Southern Motorway. We provide and deliver to each individual child the best learning experiences and top quality nurturing care from 3 months to 5 years. We are situated next to Massey Park and we have lovely spacious outdoor play areas for our infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Quality Programme

Our programme is responsive to children’s interests. We believe in the younger children learning from their older peers and the older children supporting and role modelling to the younger children (Tuakana- Teina relationships). We focus on providing them with positive and fun interactions that engage our tamariki as lifelong independent learners. We believe parents are their children’s first teachers and are dedicated to working with parents and families to continue routines from home. With our Be School Ready initiative, children are assisted with acquiring skills and knowledge they will need in the early years which help them at school and life. This includes independence, confidence, positive attitude towards learning, problem solving and areas in literacy, numeracy and art.

Our Nursery (3 months – 2.6 years)

In the Nursery we have a mixture of young infants, crawling babies and moving toddlers. We are lucky to have a separate area for our non moving babies to provide opportunities for them to move, roll and explore together. We develop warm, responsive relationships with our tamariki and our practice in this room is responsive and respectful of children’s autonomy, competence and capabilities. We provide a calm and nurturing environment where infant’s routines are unrushed, relaxed and child focused; babies are stimulated and supported and toddlers are challenged and extended. The learning and development opportunities provided are personalised to each child’s specific, individual needs. To support their learning and development we provide exciting and challenging experiences which provide opportunities to support their cognitive, social, emotional and physical competence throughout the day.

Junior Kindy (2.6 years to 3.6 years)

In the Junior Kindy room, we have a natural environment that offers a variety of open ended and natural resources that engage children in critical thinking, problem solving and working by themselves and cooperatively with other children. We value and promote a learning programme that enables children the space and the opportunity to explore, experiment and take risks when engaged in play. Teachers work individually with each child and with groups of children, offering them the support, guidance and inquiry; questioning to support their learning. The teachers provide provocations to challenge their reflectiveness to previous learning and critical inquiry to current and future learning based on the individual children’s interests, strengths and dispositions.

Senior Kindy Room (3.6years to 5years)

Our Senior Kindy Room supports opportunities for your child to be involved in independent research with and alongside their friends. Our Senior Children are supported with a fantastic Be School Ready initiative to ensure happy, confident children who are equipped with the social, emotional and academic skills to prepare them for school. Our room follows a child led programme which encourages children to investigate and explore their interests and theories with the guidance from passionate teachers.  Our teachers provide an environment that sparks the natural curiosities of all children and encourages them to discover and develop their individual skills to succeed in school.  It is a wonderful area that invites children to run, climb, jump and develop the foundation skills needed for formal learning.

Meals

First Steps Onslow promote healthy eating, and our wonderful centre cook prepares nutritious meals following the NZ Heart Foundation guidelines.  We also cater for children entering their school journey by encouraging children to bring a drink bottle daily and lunchbox on a Wednesday.  Our spacious outdoor area has gardens where children learn to care, harvest and utilise the produce from our environment.

Opening hours

We have an open door policy and we welcome visitors to the centre. We would love to show you through our pre-school, toddler and infant rooms. We are open from 7am-6pm Monday to Friday, and offer full days, short days and morning/afternoon sessions.

Parent Feedback:

“First Steps Onslow is a lovely centre and I have grown close to most if not all of the teachers here. I love going to work every day knowing that I have “family” taking care of my child. Thank you First Steps Onslow for doing such an awesome job with my son.”

“I’d just like to say how much I love seeing the big photos of our babies all around the babies centre. The centre is looking absolutely amazing. I love sending my boy to you guys and I really love seeing all the photos you take of him doing different activities. For a mum that feels like she’s missing out on a lot of milestones and moments, it really does mean a lot. They look amazing and it really gives me a buzz seeing.”
