First Steps Wattle Downs is an education and childcare centre devoted to caring for children in the Wattle Downs area and the wider community of Manurewa.

We cater for children from 6 weeks to 5 years and pride ourselves on working in partnership with parents and families to ensure that we are working towards the same goals. Our centre is run between two buildings. The Little Tui’s room caters for our children from 6 weeks to 2 ½ years.  And our Pokeko room caters for children from 2 ½ to 5 years.

We are a dynamic, multicultural centre who do more than just “watch” children. We use play as a tool to help our tamariki grow and develop into wonderful human beings, confident in themselves to reach their full potential.

Little Tuis – our infants room

The family orientated room of Little Tuis is a calm and relaxing place for your infants in which they are supported in learning at their own pace with the help of our wonderful teachers.  We encourage our tamariki to showcase their unique personalities while gaining the confidence to be risk takers and accomplish milestones that help them grow from dependent babies into independent toddlers – and believe us, this happens very fast.

We want to stand out from the rest and use Heuristic play or treasure baskets as a way to do this.  We love seeing our babies use everyday items as an open-ended resource.  They surprise us every day with the inventive and interesting ways in which they interact with the items within our treasure baskets.  Come and take a look for yourself.

Pokeko – our preschool room

Our preschool room is a hive of activity with teachers setting up different activities and experiences to engage our tamariki in all types of learning, both fun and exciting.

We pride ourselves on our relationship with Clayton Park Primary School who support our Be School Ready initiative.  We are grateful that they allow our 4 ½ year olds access to their classrooms once a week.  These visits help our tamariki gain confidence to be able to transition to Primary School with ease once they turn five.

Our newly renovated outdoor area is inviting and challenges our children to take risks and gain control over their bodies.  We look forward to meeting you and are welcome to visit anytime.

We are excited to offer our families access to Storypark e-portfolios. They are a great way to keep up to date with what you child is doing while at the centre. You can log in to the secure platform, check out photos of them and comment on their activities. Click here for more information.

“I was pleased to learn about my child’s development through personal discussions. I was able to see how pleased his teacher was with my child. It is great to see the variety of exercises that he has experienced. All with great learning value! Every page has a great story of his personal development and having lots of photos helps us parents to feel and witness what our child is doing during school hours!”
