Small World is committed to excellence in all aspects of early education and childcare. We offer a stimulating and inviting learning space for children where they are empowered to reach their learning potential.
We offer excellent teacher-child ratios and a dynamic and stimulating environment. We also have three external providers that support our programme in different ways: Gym for infants and toddlers, Yoga for 2-3 year olds Fairy Claire and Rugby Tots for 3 to 4 year olds.
At Small World we see children as leaders in their learning. Our philosophy is inspired by Te Whāriki (the National ECE Curriculum) and the Reggio Emilia approach. We believe that children learn best through play and exploration and for this we provide dynamic and challenging learning environments where children feel motivated and supported. Learning and development is fostered through children’s strengths and interests and by supporting and scaffolding children’s interests so optimal learning can take place. We provide aesthetic, inspiring and magical learning spaces that encourage children to express themselves in a variety of ways.
Our team of experienced and passionate teachers work hard to ensure that programmes are exciting and promote optimal learning. We have interwoven a variety of teaching approaches with the guidelines offered by Te Whāriki to provide programmes that are innovative and compatible with the Ministry of Education expectations.
Our teachers are selected for their knowledge, experience, professionalism and their love for teaching. All of our teachers either hold professional teaching qualifications or they are supported to obtain them. In order to provide excellence of education and care, we continuously invest in the professional growth of our teachers through a variety of professional development courses and workshops.
Tara Room is for our youngest children. Our practice in this room is inspired by Emmi Pickler and we are passionate advocates for responsive, reciprocal teaching practices that are respectful of children’s autonomy, competence and the style and rhythm of their learning. The excellent ratio of 1:3 gives us the opportunity to provide a calm and nurturing environment where infant’s routines are unrushed, relaxed and child driven. The learning and development opportunities for the infants are tailored to their specific needs.
The Tui Room is for the children aged from 1 to 2 years old. We see this as transition age for children when they are developing most of their fundamental skills. To support their learning and development we provide exciting and challenging environment where they can work on their intellectual, social and physical competence. The children in the Tui room work on their independence and confidence by taking control over their individual routines and the learning pace. In this room we offer a ratio of 1:3 and a teaching team that is passionate for working with this specific age group.
Our Moreporks Room is for the children 2 to 3 years old. The team in this room supports children through their transition stage between infancy to preschool. There are many developmental milestones at this age which are achieved with the help of a carefully planned programme and an environment that is suitable to the dynamics and requirements of this age group. The environment that we’ve designed for this age group offers a variety of open ended and natural resources that engage children in critical thinking, problem solving and working in a group. Our ratio of 1:6 gives us the opportunity to spend quality and uninterrupted time with each individual child and give them the support they require on their learning journey.
The Pukeko Room is for our 3 years old. We provide an environment and a learning programme that enables children the space and the opportunity to explore, experiment and take risks. Teachers work individually with each child, offering them the support and challenges they require in order to reach their learning potential. The environment is enriched with an indoors castle that offers children an opportunity to be physically engaged in the classroom. Based on the individual children’s interest the teachers provide provocations to challenge their reflectiveness, critical inquiry and social competence.
The Enquiry Room is for the 4 years old. The teachers in this room develop planning that is tailored to the individual needs of children in order to prepare them for a successful start at school. We have a strong Be School Ready programme in place that supports the children with the development of their foundation skills and their transition to school. The children from the Enquiry Room have weekly excursions to Mt Hobson as part of their learning.
Be School Ready
The Be School Ready programme provides children with the opportunity to develop and excel in their skills for school. The Be School Ready program implemented in the five rooms and is age appropriate. The children are empowered to develop the foundation skills for school and to become familiar with the routines, experiences and the expectations they will encounter at school. It also helps children to approach their transition to school with confidence and enthusiasm. Be School Ready programme is based on the principles of the NZ Early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki and is planned and evaluated in terms of its strands and goals.
Te Whāriki provides a foundation for children to become confident and competent lifelong learners. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach and we empower children to learn and develop in an environment full of provocations, wonder and discovery.
At Small World, we encourage our children to take leadership in their own learning and reach their learning potential through creativity, exploration, questioning and experimenting. Play is central in our daily programme and children are able to engage in play through spontaneous and structured activities.
Our excellent ratios allow teachers to work with children in smaller groups, creating an environment for learning where children are acknowledged as equal learning partners.
ICT is an important part of our Be School Ready programme and children are confident in using iPads, cameras, printers and making significant contribution towards documenting learning.
Our teachers track children’s learning journey in individual portfolios which are always available to children to revisit and reflect on their experiences. We are also actively using Storypark to communicate with our learning community and their whānau.
We are excited to offer our families access to Storypark e-portfolios. They are a great way to keep up to date with what you child is doing while at the centre.
