Welcome to BestStart Waikanae (formerly ABC Waikanae), and thank you for taking the time to learn a little about our centre. We offer childcare and education for children up to the age of 5 years old in a warm and nurturing environment that is safe, happy and full of love. Our setting is full of nature, just like your garden at home; with trees to climb, plenty of room to run and ride bikes. We even have chickens in the backyard! We back onto the grounds of Waikanae School and we often spend time rolling down the hills and exploring their playgrounds during the school holidays!

We have a diverse teaching team who bring their own passion and energy in different ways each and every day. All of us enjoy a good laugh and share the belief that learning should be fun and exciting.

Relationships are vital to us!

Real and meaningful relationships form the basis of all that we do. We pride ourselves on building strong and genuine connections with all our families because we believe this plays a critical role in our children’s ability to engage and learn. We also acknowledge that parent’s are their children’s first teachers and truly value the input they have in our planning and assessment process. We operate an open door policy and really cherish the involvement families have in our centre community. There is always time for a cuppa and a chat!

At BestStart Waikanae everyone is a teacher and a learner! We share information as a learning community and everyone is encouraged to take the lead in their area of passion or expertise. We like to teach and learn alongside one another so that the children, especially, have the opportunity to share their own knowledge and unique insights into their world. You never stop learning and I know, for me, every day is filled with new ideas and surprises.

Our Nursery

In our Nursery we follow the rhythms and routines of the children to ensure they feel safe and secure during their time with us and we work very closely with our families to make sure there is continuity between centre and home life.  We have a huge natural play space for our little ones to move about in and the teachers provide plenty of opportunities for sensory exploration which is important for helping little minds and bodies to develop and grow.

What does our programme offer?

BestStart Waikanae is a happy place full of laughter, exploration and adventures where children are encouraged to take the lead in their learning and follow their interests. As a teaching team we acknowledge every child as an individual and take the time to understand their individual learning styles, interests and strengths so that we can best support their learning and offer challenges that will enhance and extend them over this journey.

Our practice is guided by the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whāriki, and we weave the core curriculum areas, such as maths, literacy and science, into daily experiences so that children are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge in a multitude of ways. As part of the BestStart family we are involved in the Be School Ready initiative, which is focused on supporting children, right from infancy, to become confident and competent learners with a passion for life-long learning and the skills they will need to transition to school at the age of five.
We would love for you to come and visit us, meet the team and stay for a play!

Parental Feedback:

“Today Cooper woke up, and was getting ready for kindy, getting his bags together, drink bottle, hat. I had to explain that today was not Cooper’s kindy day. I cannot believe how fast Cooper has settled in, how well he is talking, how much Cooper is learning, in such a short time. Thank you all so much! You all do such an awesome job.”
