Gardening / māra

Ruma Kākano have been interested in gardening and with support from their kaiako, we have managed to create a seedling station for our pepi to watch the seeds as they grow. Gardening / māra provides some amazing learning opportunities. It is awesome to see the interest and how much they all want to participate. Time spent outdoors is an important part of the daily programme for all our babies. This gives them opportunities to explore, discover, and appreciate science and nature by growing their own food in the natural world.

This also helps them be active, strengthen fine and gross motor skills, and get messy with a sensory experience as they touch, feel, and sometimes taste the soil as they transfer it to the tiny little pot! Whānau have supported this interest as they see our seedlings growing and have donated us many tiny garden seedlings and other plants.
