BestStart Oraha Road is a purpose-built centre located in the beautiful semi-rural community of Kumeū/Huapai area, providing quality education and care for tamariki from 3 months up until they go to school.

Nurture the seed and it will blossom

We put relationships at the heart of everything we do!

From the moment you walk through our doors, you will feel a sense of aroha (love). You will be welcomed by the smiling faces of our caring and friendly kaiako and staff, and will see happy, engaged, confident and capable tamariki.

Our philosophy embodies the principles of the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki. The principles of Empowerment, Holistic Development, Family and Community, and Relationships underpin our centre programme and coincide with the Reggio Emilia approach which informs our practice and curriculum design. We believe that every child brings with them a deep curiosity that drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it. Our goal is to embrace this curiosity, challenge each child’s thinking and facilitate their eagerness to learn and construct understanding.

We acknowledge and support the aspirations contained in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and value working alongside tangata whenua Māori and tangata tiriti (treaty partners with Māori, which means all people other than Māori). We focus on affirming children’s mana and individual identity to create a sense of belonging and safety.

Our five indoor classrooms are built to support the learning and development of each age group. Our well-resourced learning environment create a space where tamariki feel safe and secure to explore new and exciting wonders.

We value our environment as the ‘third teacher’, therefore the detail and attention placed in our environment is purposeful and meaningful with the intent of provoking a sense of wonder, imagination, exploration, and discovery. There is an understanding on the importance of each kaiako and the critical role they play in children’s learning. Our kaiako are intentional in their practice - observing, assessing, planning, and creating inquiry and play-based projects where tamariki actively explore and investigate areas and topics that interest them.

Our team of passionate and professional kaiako are carefully selected for their knowledge, experience, professionalism, and their love for teaching.  Our excellent teacher-child ratios support high quality care and learning, and ensure needs are met and responded to in a way that shows respect and fosters trust. You will feel a sense of belonging in a place where tamariki and whānau are cared for, supported, and respected.  A place where tamariki are loved, encouraged, and empowered.

Our expansive outdoor areas are surrounded by established trees which provide a naturally beautiful backdrop for growth and development.  Our interactive riverbed flows under a bridge into a huge sandpit where the only limitation is the imagination!

The learning journey and milestones of each child is captured and shared through daily conversations, kaiako observations, pedagogical documentation, and individual learning stories posted on our online learning platform - Storypark. This is a great way to keep up-to-date with what your tamariki is learning and engaging in while at the centre.

We offer BestStarts’ ‘Be School Ready’ initiative for our preschool tamariki -which is interweaved into our daily practice, assisting with the next step in children’s learning journey. The initiative promotes self-help skills and provides a range of learning experiences to extend children’s independence and holistic development. To support this initiative, we also offer a ‘bring your own lunchbox’ day during the week to support children’s self-help skills and understanding as they practice opening their lunchbox and eating their own lunch. Learning in a way that is social, fun, and meaningful.

At BestStart Oraha, we understand the important role nutrition plays in a child’s wellbeing, learning and development - as well as making healthy meals that look, smell, and taste good so that our tamariki will eat them! This is why our centre chef is committed to designing a menu that serves local, fresh, seasonal ingredients, and tasty food options that provide appropriate nourishment, less sugar and salt, appeals to children’s tastes, reflects diverse cultures and caters to the unique needs of all our tamariki.

kind words from our parents

Parent

The teachers made a real effort to get to know us, as well as our baby boy.

Parent

Leaving my daughter in your care has been difficult, after all you are strangers. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my family and making us feel so at ease, I no longer see you as a stranger, more like a new member in our family.

Parent

We are both so happy with the level of care and attention our son receives while in your care. He’s thriving!

Emma

Transferring my child from another daycare centre where he had been from a very young age was a daunting task! On our first day at BestStart Oraha Road he settled in well to his new classroom environment. The teachers had him engaged in new and interesting activities quickly. Though there were a few tears over the first week (to be expected!) the teachers and manager have worked really hard on building a great relationship with him which has made the world of difference! He happily goes off to daycare every morning, and always looks forward to seeing his new friends and teachers!

Rhiannon

My son goes to the new BestStart daycare on Oraha Road and he loves it! Highly recommend!

Laura

My daughter started at BestStart Oraha Road a month or so ago and it's awesome! The teachers are great and it's nice at the moment while there's not many kids, something I know will change. The outside area is awesome and the kids love watching the diggers and cranes onver the fence.

Shaye

Enrolling our son at BestStart Oraha Road was the best decision we made. Each time we pull into the driveway he yells ‘yay’ and once out of the car he can’t get inside fast enough. He asks to go every day (even on the weekends) and exclaims 'I love daycare'. All the teachers and staff are very friendly and clearly have the children’s best interests in mind. We love BestStart Oraha Road.

Ben

We came to BestStart Oraha Road from another centre, the Beststart team took the time to get to know my daughter's personality and her needs. The smile on her face when she arrives in the morning lets me know she sees BestStart Oraha as a great place to be and a positive experience. As parents we have the peace of mind knowing that our little girl is having fun in a safe and supportive environment.

Sushannah

My family and I have really enjoyed our time at BestStart Oraha Road so far. My children love it and enjoy attending. The teachers are just wonderful and so friendly always giving out hugs and lots of attention. The staff always go the extra mile when one of my children is having a hard day and don't want me to leave. I always leave them there knowing they are well looked after and going to have an afternoon full of adventure.

Amanda

Having to go back to work early was scary enough with a young baby (also my first) but the team at Best Starts Oraha Road's friendly and professional approach gave me complete confidence that I was leaving my son in good hands. He is always smiling when I drop him off and smiling when I pick him up, his mental and physical development has greatly increased which I am sure is due to their contribution. I have no doubt in my mind that I have made the right choice in daycare services.

Kirsty

We are completely happy with BestStart Oraha, from day one the staff have made us feel welcome and comfortable, greeting all of us with warm, happy smiles. Our little girl who is only 1 is excited and keen to go explore and play with her new friends every time we arrive, it was the best choice we made sending her to this lovely centre.

Jo

As a parent I love the communication we get from BestStart Oraha. The staff have made all of our family feel like a part of theirs and I'm so glad we made the switch.

Deb

Extremely welcoming and supportive teachers have helped the transition of our baby boy attending daycare to be a very positive experience. His teachers have taken the time to really get to know him and us. They are always happy to discuss what has happened in his day and share the adventures he has had. I believe that communication is integral, and at BestStart we are constantly informed of his progress. He has a personalised day book and also stories and photos of his experiences are shared weekly with us which is awesome! We are reassured and feel at ease knowing he is in a safe, nurturing and caring learning environment. It is a lovely centre and our boy is really happy there.

Michelle

BestStart Oraha Road are simply amazing. The staff obviously love their job and are so engaged with the children. It’s clean and the activities and toys are awesome, not to mention the outdoor play area. I love the frequent updates and feedback in Storypark about our son and the centre. We are so happy with having our son at Oraha. Thank you for being such a wonderful team.

Jen

I was really impressed at the head teacher's (Tracy) thoughtfulness when Annabelle started in the Infants room at BestStart Oraha. Annabelle was a bit unsure when she started and quite sensitive to other children's tears at drop off time. Once she started crying she wasn't keen to stop! Tracey suggested we try her first sessions on a different day of the week so we weren't encountering other sensitive souls at the morning drop off. It made all the difference to our transition to childcare and Annabelle settled in really quickly. She really enjoys her day-care mornings and I'm quite confident leaving her in the care of the BestStart Oraha team.

Raquela

We have just started at Best Start Oraha and have been so impressed with the community feel and the care and attention during our settling in process.

Renee

When we started at the centre the staff took extra care to help settle our daughter in as she was moving from another day care and doesn't like chance. She adjusted fast due to the time the teachers dedicated to getting to know her and what she likes. She always comes home with plenty of stories about the fun she has had that day and loves going so much that she even getting upset on the days she isn't going!

Rachel

It has been over a month since my 26-month-old son went to BestStart Oraha Road. At first, I was worried that my child would settle in well, but now he finds himself playing and has a good time hanging out with other kids. Teachers care for their children with love, and above all, I applaud Odele’s amazing management. She creates a perfect environment so that we can attend our child without worrying. Also my son loves here! We are so happy to join in the BestStart Oraha Road.

Jess & Chopper Keen

We have both our daughters enrolled and attending BestStart Oraha Road and we love it because the staff are so friendly and caring towards our girls and all the children. They are really helpful & supportive with implementing transitions we are currently going through at home e.g toilet training our eldest and changing from formula to cow’s milk for our youngest. It makes it easy and consistent for both the children and us. The girls absolutely love their teachers as well. We see their faces when we drop them off each morning and they are excited and happy to be there. The centre itself is beautiful and has lots of amazing resources that the children get to enjoy on a daily basis as well as getting to be involved in activities like baking and even day trips. We thoroughly recommend BestStart Oraha Road.

Jess Newmarch

We moved our son to BestStart Oraha Road from another centre when we shifted into the area. I had always felt slightly uneasy about our old centre but I wasn't sure why - changing to BestStart has shown me what a centre should be like! The staff are kind, caring and take the time to get to know our boy. The ratios are great and it never feels too busy or out of control like the old one did. The food is healthy and varied, there are lots of great activities and a fantastic outdoor play area. Our son is always happy and engaged when we collect him and talks about his teachers and what they get up to together all the time!

Hillary Morris

My daughter has adjusted so well to life at kindy with BestStart Oraha Road, thanks to the staff who are so friendly and supportive. She absolutely loves it there.

Brittany McGregor

We love BestStart Oraha because everyone is so incredibly friendly and make all children feel welcomed and happy. Our little girl loves all the friends she has made, loves playing with all the amazing toys and equipment and importantly looks up to her teachers. We couldn’t have found a more perfect place to send our daughter.

Vineeta

It was amazing to see how our 2 year old settled so well within a week of transferring him to Beststart Oraha. The transition was amazing and was not rushed at all. The wonderful cook - Penny took time to understand his vegetarian preferences and ensures he gets yummy vegetarian lunches everyday. It's a relief for us to know that our little boy is in safe hands :)

Irene and Brad

We are happy to say that we made the right decision to enroll our boy in BestStart Oraha, a newly open centre with spacious and awesome staffs. They have been making so much efforts to make the centre better and we have been witnessing its amazing development. The manager Odele and teachers are really nice and caring. Heaps of fantastic activities and events have been organised for kids to experience, learn new things and have lots of fun. Every day when we picked up our boy, he always can't wait to tell us what exciting things he has done with his little mates and teachers during the day. Last but not least, the cook is really awesome and amazing. She not only designs yummy and healthy menu for kids, but also taught them how to make some artistic food. Because of these wonderful persons in BestStart Oraha, we saw lots of changes in our boy. Now, he has become more independent and likes to try and do things on his own. Thank you BestStart Oraha, you’re amazing!

Chaitali

BestStart Oraha Road is amazing. My daughter loves it and all the teachers are just lovely.

Kara

As there are multiple childcare centres in the area, I would just like to put it out there how amazing BestStart Oraha Road are. My daughter has been going there since the beginning of the year, and as 'one of those parents' I can not fault them. Amazing centre, staff and manager. They go above and beyond in every way.

Jo

We joined BestStart in September and have always felt welcome, kept well-informed about our child's day or things happening, the manager is always chatting to us and any relievers always introduce themselves and are qualified.

Emma

I want to thank you for all the amazing support you have given to Kaiden and his whanau since we joined. Although we have only been with the Oraha whanau for a short 6 months, it feels like we have been there all along. You've made his transition seamless and you embraced him from day one and within the first week I saw a happy confident young boy who was excited about going and couldn't wait to get to BestStart Oraha Road for the days adventures. I can not express to you or the team how much it's meant and the positive impact Kaiden's journey here has had. I highly recommend Oraha Road to everyone who asks because you love nurture and care for every child and their whanau support amazingly and strive to meet their needs. Thank you for everything I am forever grateful.
