Puzzles come in many shapes, sizes, and forms. They support children in problem-solving while they learn about colours, shapes, numbers, letters, and many other concepts.

Learning and Development

  • Puzzles are a fantastic way for children to develop perseverance, patience and problem-solving skills.

  • They help improve hand-eye coordination, enabling children to refine their movements and gain control of their bodies.

  • Puzzle play strengthens the finger and hand muscles – the same motor skills required for learning how to write.

  • At our centres, we offer a variety of puzzles to suit all abilities, including jigsaw, 3D puzzles, shape and space recognition activities and mazes.

  • Puzzles help children practice reasoning and handling frustration, as they learn that things may not always work out immediately. Teachers support this process by allowing children to work at their own pace, talking through their efforts and suggesting alternative strategies.

How puzzle play relates to the primary school curriculum

Continuing Learning at Home

  • Have a variety of puzzles:
Keep a variety of puzzles on hand – stacking puzzles and threading puzzles provide age-appropriate challenges as your child grows. Incorporate puzzles that teach shape, number recognition and size to introduce additional learning concepts like geometry, literacy and measurement.

  • Family Photo Puzzle:
Make a family photo puzzle: print a family photo, glue it to cardboard and cut it into pieces suited to your child’s age and ability (e.g., 2,4,6,8 or 16 pieces).

  • Provide a clean, organised space:
Ensure the puzzle area stays tidy to give your child the time and space they need to solve puzzles without distractions.

  • Since children quickly outgrow puzzles, consider joining a toy library to access a wide range of resources and keep things fresh.
