At Tūāpapa ki Papawhiro/BestStart Willowpark, we have recently been focusing on Mahi Toi/Arts and Crafts!
We've also been looking at how we can support tamariki to develop their independence in this area.
In the Papatūānuku room (Under 2's), we introduced a new art trolley which holds a variety of "art tools" such as coloured pencils, crayons, pots of paint, palette paints and felt pens. Tamariki are able to choose which "tool" they wish to use and the creative juices flow as they complete their masterpieces!
This provides opportunities for tamariki to discover different ways to be creative and express their feelings and ideas using a wide range of materials and modes / he kōrero auaha.
As tamariki make choices about engaging in art experiences alongside their friends, as well as about the tools they wish to use, they are developing skills such as turn-taking and sharing. They are building relationships as they have fun working alongside their friends.
As our tamariki explore and engage in mahi toi (arts and crafts) experiences, we can see the characteristics of our Atua Māui as we see curiosity, creativity and problem-solving shining through.
We also see the beauty of Rongo-mā-Tāne and Papatūānuku through the colours and creativity of the artworks created.
