Yes. Comfort items such as a favourite blanket, soft toy or family photo can help children feel more secure when they are adjusting to childcare. Familiar objects provide reassurance and can support emotional wellbeing during times of change.

Many children use comfort items to help manage new experiences, transitions and periods of separation from their parents. Having something familiar nearby can help children feel calmer and build confidence as they become comfortable in a new environment.

At BestStart, we welcome comfort items from home and work with families to understand what helps their child feel settled. We also ensure comfort items are used safely and appropriately within the centre environment.

Good to know

  • Comfort items often play an important role during transitions such as starting childcare, moving rooms or changes at home.
  • It’s helpful to label comfort items with your child’s name so they can be easily identified if misplaced.
  • As children become more familiar with their environment and routines, their reliance on comfort items may naturally change over time.
