How do you support toilet training?

We support toilet training by working closely with families and following each child's individual readiness, routine and pace. Toilet training is a developmental milestone, and children are most successful when they feel confident, supported and ready to take the next step.

Every child learns toileting skills differently. Consistent routines, gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement can help children recognise their body cues, build independence and develop confidence with toileting, dressing and handwashing.

At BestStart, we work in partnership with families to understand the approaches and routines being used at home so we can provide consistent support at the centre. Our teachers encourage children in a patient and respectful way, recognising that accidents are a normal part of the learning process and responding with care and understanding.

Good to know

  • Signs that a child may be ready for toilet training can include showing interest in the toilet, staying dry for longer periods, communicating when they need to go or wanting more independence.
  • Consistency between home and childcare can help children feel more confident and successful as they learn new toileting skills.
  • Packing spare clothes during toilet training can help children and teachers manage accidents calmly and comfortably.
