What is the best age for my child to start childcare?

There isn't one "best" age for every child to start childcare. The right time depends on your family's needs, your child's personality and temperament, and when they are ready to begin building new relationships and routines.

Every family's situation is different. Some children start childcare in their first year, while others begin later. What matters most isn't the age they start, but that they are supported by caring teachers, consistent routines and a gradual settling process that helps them feel safe, secure and confident.

At BestStart, we work closely with families to understand each child's individual needs and create a positive transition into childcare. By building strong relationships from the beginning, we help children develop confidence, wellbeing and a sense of belonging from their very first day.

Good to know

  • Settling visits can help children become familiar with new people, routines and environments before their official start date.
  • Building positive relationships with teachers is often one of the most important factors in a successful transition to childcare.
  • A gradual introduction can help some children feel more comfortable and confident as they start childcare.
