How do babies learn?

Babies learn through play, exploration and responsive relationships with the people around them. Every interaction and experience helps babies make sense of the world, develop new skills and build confidence in their abilities.

During the first years of life, babies learn by watching, listening, touching, moving and communicating. Everyday experiences such as sharing books, singing songs, exploring different textures and interacting with others all contribute to learning and development. These experiences help build language, physical, social and emotional skills.

At BestStart, our teachers create safe, engaging environments that encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery. By responding to each baby's interests, strengths and stage of development, teachers support meaningful learning experiences that help build strong foundations for future growth and learning.

Good to know

  • Babies learn through all of their senses, which is why touching, tasting, listening, watching and moving are such important parts of early learning.
  • Repetition helps babies learn. Hearing the same songs, stories, words and routines over time helps build understanding and confidence.
  • Curiosity is an important driver of learning, and even simple actions such as dropping, reaching for or mouthing objects help babies test ideas and learn how the world works.
