Will my baby have a primary caregiver?

Many childcare centres use a primary caregiving approach, where one teacher takes primary responsibility for building a close, consistent relationship with a baby and supporting much of their daily care. This approach can help babies feel secure and develop trust as they become familiar with the people caring for them.

Strong, consistent relationships are an important part of infant care. When babies regularly interact with familiar teachers who understand their routines, cues and preferences, they are more likely to feel settled and supported.

At BestStart, many of our centres use a primary caregiving approach, although this may vary by centre. Regardless of the structure used, we prioritise small group sizes and strong teacher-child relationships so every baby can build meaningful connections with familiar teachers.

Good to know

  • Primary caregiving approaches can vary between centres, so it’s worth asking your local centre how they support relationship-based care.
  • Even when a primary caregiver approach is used, babies build relationships with other teachers throughout the day.
  • Sharing information about your baby’s routines, preferences and cues can help teachers provide more consistent care.
