Different early childhood philosophies support children's learning and development in different ways. While each approach has its own focus, all aim to help children build confidence, develop new skills and foster a love of learning.

Some approaches, such as Montessori, emphasise independence, self-directed learning and carefully prepared environments. Reggio Emilia focuses on children's interests, creativity and collaborative learning, while RIE/Pikler places particular importance on respectful relationships, responsive caregiving and allowing babies and young children to develop at their own pace. Kindergartens and many early childhood centres use play-based approaches guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand's early childhood curriculum.

At BestStart, every centre develops its own philosophy and localised curriculum based on the unique children, whānau and community it serves. Some centres may be inspired by approaches such as Montessori, Reggio Emilia or RIE/Pikler, while others follow different educational philosophies. Regardless of approach, all BestStart centres are guided by Te Whāriki and share a commitment to helping children learn and grow through meaningful relationships, play and responsive teaching.

Good to know

  • No single early childhood philosophy is considered the "best" for every child. The right fit often depends on your child's personality, your family's values and the learning environment.
  • Many modern early childhood services draw on ideas from multiple educational philosophies rather than following a single approach.
  • Visiting a centre, meeting the teachers and observing the environment can help you understand whether it feels right for your child and whānau.
