How do you respond to children's behaviour?

We respond to children's behaviour using positive guidance, caring relationships and developmentally appropriate support. For babies and young children, behaviour is often a form of communication and can reflect feelings, needs or frustrations that they are not yet able to express in words.

Young children are still learning emotional regulation, social skills and how to communicate effectively. Understanding the reason behind behaviour helps adults respond calmly and consistently while supporting children to develop new skills and strategies over time.

At BestStart, our teachers take the time to understand what a child may be communicating through their behaviour and respond in a respectful, supportive way. We use positive guidance, model appropriate behaviours, set clear and consistent boundaries and work closely with families to support each child's emotional and social development.

Good to know

  • Young children's behaviour often communicates a need, feeling or stage of development rather than intentional misbehaviour.
  • Learning skills such as sharing, waiting, taking turns and managing big emotions takes time and develops gradually throughout early childhood.
  • Consistent responses between home and childcare can help children feel more secure and supported as they learn new social and emotional skills.
