How do you support babies to reach developmental milestones?
Every baby develops at their own pace, and developmental milestones are intended to be guides rather than strict timelines. The best way to support development is by providing opportunities for babies to practice new skills through play, exploration and responsive relationships.
Developmental milestones help track areas such as movement, communication, social skills and learning. While many babies reach milestones within similar age ranges, individual differences are a normal part of development. Regular opportunities to explore, interact and build confidence help babies develop new skills over time.
At BestStart, our teachers observe each baby's interests, strengths and stage of development to plan experiences that support emerging skills. Through everyday interactions, play and exploration, we encourage children to build confidence as they learn to communicate, move, discover new things and develop relationships. We also work closely with families to celebrate progress and support each child's individual development.
Good to know
- Developmental milestones are intended to be guides, not deadlines. Children often develop skills at different times and in different ways.
- Progress in one area of development can sometimes temporarily slow progress in another as children focus on mastering new skills.
- If families, teachers or health professionals have concerns about a child's development, early support and assessment can help identify the best ways to support their learning and wellbeing.
