What does a typical day look like for a baby in childcare?

A typical day for a baby includes a balance of play, rest, feeding, care routines and responsive interactions that support learning and development. Rather than following a strict timetable, most babies follow routines that reflect their individual needs, rhythms and stage of development.

Babies learn through everyday experiences. Throughout the day, there are opportunities for exploring, playing, building relationships, spending time outdoors, communicating with others and participating in care routines such as feeding, sleeping and nappy changes. These experiences all contribute to learning, wellbeing and development.

At BestStart, our teachers follow each baby's individual routines and respond to their cues throughout the day. By balancing care, play, rest and learning experiences, we create a calm and predictable environment where babies feel secure, supported and free to learn at their own pace.

Good to know

  • Daily routines help babies feel secure because they know what to expect, even as their sleep, feeding and care needs change over time.
  • Many of a baby's most important learning experiences happen during everyday moments such as mealtimes, nappy changes, play and interactions with others.
  • No two days are exactly the same. Teachers respond to each baby's interests, energy levels, routines and cues throughout the day.
